THIRTY-SEVEN

YOU THINK those planes out there are Flight 19?” Decker looked at Colum, incredulous.

“Flight 19?” Mina said, her gaze shifting between the two men. “No way. I read a book on them a few years ago. They were a squadron of TBM Avenger torpedo bombers that took off from the Naval Air Station in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, a few months after World War Two ended. They were flying a training exercise east toward the Bahamas before flying north and then turning back toward home. After a couple of garbled radio communications, they were never heard from again. The Navy attributed their loss to the Bermuda triangle.”

“That’s right,” Colum said.

“They must have encountered a storm just like us and Celine Rothman.” Rory was talking fast. “I bet they traveled backwards in time and ended up landing here years before they took off.”

“You think the people that run this base know those airmen are from the future?”

“I guarantee it,” Colum said. “Those men would have been mightily confused when they landed. From their point of view, the war is over, but to everyone else here it’s still going on.”

“Not to mention that earlier versions of them would still be wandering around out there somewhere,” Rory said. “It wouldn’t take much digging to figure out there were two versions of the same men occupying the same point in time.”

“Exactly.”

“None of this helps us,” Decker said. “We’re still trapped here with no way to get home, and I can’t imagine our captors have cracked the secret of time travel even if they are willing to help us.”

“Are you saying we’re trapped here forever?” Mina asked.

“No.” Decker shook his head. “I don’t believe in impossible situations. There’s always a solution. We’re just not going to find it locked in this room.”

“What do you propose we do?” Colum asked. “I know you have a plan, by the look on your face.”

“Not really a plan so much as a course of action. I’m still playing this by ear. Get us out of here first, then deal with the next problem.” Decker walked to the door. He bunched his fists and hammered on it, then shouted as loud as he could. “If there’s anyone out there, I need to talk with the base commander. I have information that can help him.”

“What are you doing?” Rory asked, hurrying toward Decker. “Drawing attention to us like this might only make things worse.”

“The men out there have barely spoken to us in two days,” Hunt said. “I think John has the right idea.”

“Me, too.” Colum crossed the room and clenched his own fists, then joined Decker pounding on the door. “You need to listen to this man. He can help you.”

A gruff voice drifted from the other side of the door. “Keep it down in there. If Colonel Spear wants to talk to you, he’ll tell us.”

“You need to take a message to him,” Decker shouted back. “Tell him we know what’s going on here. We know all about those airmen you’re holding in the opposite barrack room.
